Letters To… is a set of actions stemming from Franz Kafka’s Letters to Milena. This book pieces together the story of their relationship through Kafka’s letters only. Milena often seems like a phantom, perhaps a fictional character Kafka wrote to in order to vent his anxieties. The other reality is that much of Milena’s life is only described in relation to Kafka, a problem with the historical narratives that focus on the male genius at the expense of the stories of women on their own terms.
To capture some of this difficulty I wrote letters to inanimate objects and imagined people. This started during my residency on Hrisey, Iceland, as a way to combat the isolation I felt. However, real life got in the way of my fantasies, and the letters have always been difficult to deliver. They are left as evidence of failed communication.
